A master’s degree program realizing the fun of research – studying hard together with excellent students
After graduating from the Systems Innovation course SIM (equivalent to SDM course today), I developed an interest in multi-physics simulation and went on to study in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering. Currently, I belong to the Sakai laboratory with research achievements leading Japan in numerical simulations of powder / multiphase flow. There are active research activities at the Sakai laboratory with many students being awarded at academic conferences at home and abroad as well as being awarded the dean of school of engineering at a rate of once every two years. Research is progressed cooperatively among excellent students studying hard. With industry-academia-government cooperation and international collaborative research being carried out actively, there is a true feel there for the speed and diversity of research. I was provided with a research topic for international collaborative research with Imperial College London, UK and the research was published in the authoritative international academic journal (I also studied abroad for two months at Imperial College London). With many opportunities provided for conference presentations, I have been given opportunities and five wards through conference presentations at home and abroad during my Master’s degree program. Impressive research achievements have been realized and rewarded. Through these, I realized the fun of research and progressed to the doctoral course. In the future, I would like to study hard with excellent students and work hard to succeed in further research.

Importance of doctorate acquisition
After graduating from the Systems Innovation department E&E course, I went on to the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering. After the completion of the Master degree program, I started working at a think tank specializing in energy. At present I belong to this doctoral course whilst still working for the think tank. My specialty which is the evaluation and analysis of energy systems involves carrying out analysis from a bird’s eye view of all the energies – not only nuclear energy – in Japan and the world from environmental, economical and technological aspects and it is a research area closely linked to energy policy planning and enterprise decision making. For me, my experience working outside the university in Japan and overseas made me strongly believe that in order for a researcher to be valued as an experienced human resource in society, a doctorate is indispensable, hence that was the main reason that made me return to do a doctoral course in this major. It is hard to juggle work as a student with a job but believing that increasing my specialty knowledge through acquiring a doctorate and contributing to energy・environmental problem solving will allow me to be more useful for everyone, and I work hard every day on my research.

Make use of a privileged environment to aim to be a world-class researcher!
Having worked on a graduation thesis relating to radiation measurement, I wanted to pursue it further which is why I joined the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering Master degree program. Currently I belong to the Takahashi laboratory which is producing world leading research in the field of radiation measurement. The most surprising thing after starting was the fact that there were many opportunities for taking yourself up to a higher level. As well as the teaching faculty members providing challenging research topics, there is access to the world's most advantaged technologies or knowledge which makes the research feel very rewarding. I decided to go onto the doctoral course of this major, aiming to become a researcher. As I was able to achieve research results in such a privileged environment, I was designated to become the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science special researcher (DC1). I studied abroad in the first year of the doctoral course and with the support of long-term overseas placement from leading graduate schools (GSDM), studied for six months at the University of California, Berkeley・Lawrence National laboratory. With my field of vision being opened up through studying abroad, I got to review my attitude towards research as well as thinking. I believe you will also be able to grasp the chance to develop yourself beyond what you think is possible.

Acquire a network of people for life through international experience
After graduating from the Systems Innovation department SIM course (now the SDM course), I completed a Master’s course at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering. The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering provides extensive support for succeeding abroad such as methods for studying abroad for international internships. I was also at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for nearly two months and experienced world-leading research. I still continue to conduct research at the university. The network of people I built while I was a student is still around and I am very grateful. I chose radiation measurement as my specialist subject. This field requires various knowledge and technology related to radiation/physical properties/signal processing/analog/digital circuits, etc., but that means that the student may challenge many things based on their own idea and this will make it worth their while. At the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering, an extensive student life can be carried out under wonderful supervisors no matter what research topic is chosen.

Fun research in an environment full of possibilities
The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering is friendly with students from other laboratories and provides a friendly environment. There are many students from abroad or from other universities domestically and students with various backgrounds gather together there. I’m also from Mongolia and, although I studied at another university in the country, I was able to fit in immediately after matriculating into the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering. Also, at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering, there are many studies being carried out including nuclear energy as well as radiation therapy, laser or accelerator development and it is possible to find a research topic that suits every individual. I became a member of the Ishikawa Sato laboratory which studies the latest interactions between lasers and atoms/molecules. It’s because I had interest in the behavior of electrons over an extremely short period of time. It differs from my research topic while at university, but I continue to have fun researching it every day.

My thoughts regarding the appeal of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management
I went from Systems Innovation department E&E course to the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering. What do you all imagine when you hear the words “nuclear energy”? “Nuclear energy” not only refers to its use as energy but various aspects including the use of radiation in the fields such as medicine as well as social acceptability of its safety and risks. I conduct research into the risk assessment methods of nuclear power plants but I also proactively tackle fields which aren’t my research subjects in the lectures and exercises. It is important to consider things beyond the boundaries of fields from a multi-faceted viewpoint not just for nuclear energy, but in order to solve the problems surrounding modern society. Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management School of Engineering is composed of teachers from a wide variety of research subjects and students with varied backgrounds, providing an environment in which people are able to acquire a wide field of view. Please broaden your horizons by using the many points of view in respect of this complicated problem surrounding nuclear energy and find your own path.
